INSTRUMENTAL is a concert length work written for pipe organ, cello, viola, clarinet, flute, two voices, and electronics.

Inspired by Gregorian Chant, the music is a contemporary setting of a sacred meditation.

The piece is an exploration of the ephemerality of live performance and how venue becomes a performer. The venue of a performance embodies acoustic properties as well as symbolic connotations that are present in performance and possibly affect one’s experience of the music. INSTRUMENTAL is composed to engage with this concept, and the music is intended to exist as a live experience rather than a studio recording.

For this reason, INSTRUMENTAL was toured in the fall of 2019 with a series of live performances in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Cleveland, and Miami. Each performance included different performers local to the city of performance, and each performance showcased a different venue with pipe organ.

INSTRUMENTAL: Chicago Performance is a recording and documentation of the Chicago performance from the 2019 INSTRUMENTAL Tour. The Chicago performance took place at the St. Vincent de Paul Parish on November 13th, 2019.
