about

Crown of Feathers is a group of compositions selected from two live gigs that came at the end of a particularly active period for Glass Hand. After a short tour at the end of the summer of 2018, they were given a string of gigs in conjunction with the Chicago Jazz Festival, followed by a set at Experimental Sound Studio’s famed Option Series, and finally, a date on the road at Audio for the Arts in Madison, WI. They decided to use these opportunities to hone in on a specific group of challenging pieces, some of which they had been working on for the better part of a year. With inspiration coming from their love of modernist western classical composition and contemporary jazz, the music on this record stretches the limits of their individual technique, and has pushed the group toward developing a fluid approach that unifies their affinity for complex notated music with free improvisation. As a result, Crown of Feathers contains a stunning multitude of sounds and textures, which carries forward as a collective, while still making each composer’s identity present throughout.

Glass Hand is a versatile trio of young improvisors that cultivates a wide repertoire and variety of approaches, focusing on original music and free improvisation. This group performs regularly in the Chicago Jazz and Creative Music scenes.

Sarah Clausen - alto saxophone
Jakob Heinemann - bass
Emerson Hunton - drums
